National Day of the Cowboy El Paso Date: Jul 23, 2011 - Time: 01:00 PM to 05:00 PM
Day of the Cowboy Saturday, July 23, 2011
El Paso Museum of History 1PM-4PM
510 North Santa Fe Street, El Paso, Texas
Find out what being a cowboy is all about at the second annual National Day of the Cowboy at the El Paso Museum of History. Hands on activities will be available including making rope, branding your own piece of wood to take home, seeing a real chuck wagon and learning how cowboys ate on the round-ups, visit with living history characters of the Old West and witness a gunfight between the good guys and the desperados, courtesy of Paso Del Norte Pistoleros and Six Guns and Shady Ladies. Kids will get an opportunity to try on reproduction clothes of a century ago, grind coffee, participate in a flour sack race, and have fun being a real cowboy or cowgirl. Demonstrations of rose necklace making and pomanders will be presented.
For the first time the Museum of History will host the Castro Family Charros and their horses. Inside the museum will be a display of the different saddles and clothing worn in the Charros tradition while outside demonstrations of Charros riding techniques will be shown. We will also feature two guest authors of books about the old west. The first, John Baxter, author of “Cowboy Park” will talk about how a famous arena opened in Juarez, Mexico, to feature steer roping events after they became outlawed in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The second is Jaime “Jimmy” Portillo, who is the writer/creator of the new local comic book series Hell Paso: The story of Dallas Stoudenmier which is based on the history of an El Paso marshal who served from 1881 to 1882 and whose handgun is on display in the museum. Portillo’s series was made possible with a grant from the Wild West History Association. Both authors will have their books for sale in the Museum Gift shop and will autograph a copy for you. Rounding out the day will be square dancing on the patio. So put on your boots and spurs and be a cowboy or cowgirl for a day!
