Master Gunsmith and author David Chicoine’s love of American History became the foundation for his interest
in researching the design and manufacture of firearms. Now antiques in today’s marketplace,
these were the firearms which changed the face of our nation, especially during
the time-period surrounding the Civil War. From the time David could understand
what a tool was he began taking apart and fixing anything he could get his hands
on. This included revolvers that neighborhood policemen would bring by for tune-ups.
Thus, a marriage of history and repairs was born. What began as a small teen-age
hobby became a life-long commitment to the repair and restoration of antique firearms,
a career which spans almost 30 years.
David’s years of hands-on gunsmithing and restoration experience
include such classic weapons such as Colt, Greener, Holland & Holland, Marlin, Merwin,
Parker, Purdey, Remington, Sharps, L. C. Smith, Smith & Wesson, Webley, Winchester,
to name a few. As well as modern replicas from ASM, Armi-Sport, Cimarron, Dixie
Gun Works, Navy Arms, Pedersoli, Pietta and Uberti.
Until 2000, when David and his wife Kathy moved to North Carolina,
he owned and operated Liberty Antique Gunworks in Eastport, Maine which was a full-line
firearms repair and restoration business. From 1976 until 2000 when he sold the
inventory, David owned the only company anywhere specializing in obsolete parts
for older Smith & Wesson revolvers with an inventory of thousands of original parts.
He is at this time in the process of rebuilding an inventory of parts for antique
S&W revolvers. Since the mid-1970s the Smith & Wesson factory, U.S. Repeating Arms
Co. (Winchester rifles), Remington Arms and Marlin Firearms have been referring
their customers with older and antique firearms to David for repair and restoration
services.
Although David has made his living repairing and restoring antique
firearms, his field of expertise also includes authentication, appraisals and consignment
sales for these beautiful examples of American history.
In 1996 David and his wife began an antique firearms newspaper called Bullet ‘N
Press which ran quarterly for 5 years. It was through this publication that his
writing skills were discovered and he now writes on a regular basis. David is now
the author of five books, ranging from the historical and collectible, to the guns
used in today’s Cowboy Action shooting. These titles include, Gunsmithing Guns
of the Old West, (now 2nd edition), Smith and Wesson: Sixguns of the Old
West, Guns of the New West, and Antique
Firearms Assembly/Disassembly. David also writes for several publications including
the American Gunsmith, and the American Rifleman.
Married to his wife Kathy since his gunsmithing began in the
late 1970s, he currently lives in North Carolina where he enjoys his family, his
three grand-children and is active in church and community, volunteering at the
local food shelter.
David is a
