Near the year of 1877 Clay Calhoun was Deputy U.S. Marshal for Arizona, Tombstone, and leader of a group of 5 or 6 men known as "Outlaw Exterminators, Inc." By the time the Earps arrived in Tombstone in 1879, Calhoun had moved on.

This is the same badge as worn by Ronald Reagan in the 1953 classic "Law and Order". Reagan as "Frame Johnson" cleans up the western town of Tombstone, Arizona. After nearly being lynched, Johnson and his sweetheart move to the quiet town of Cottonwood, Arizona where once again the trouble begins. After loosing a partner Johnson is forced to once again become a lawman, taking up his badge and six shooter to rid the town of the rugged band of outlaws.

Virgil Earp wore such a badge as this during his time in Tombstone. Virgil was commissioned by Crawley P. Dake, U.S. Marshal for Arizona. After Virgil was ambushed and crippled in 1882, it was Dake who appointed Wyatt as a (temporary) Deputy U.S. Marshal to pursue his brother Morgan's killer.

In 1879 Wyatt Earp, who had built a reputation as a gunfighter in Dodge City, Kansas, settled in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. Earp tried to create some semblance of order in Arizona, working first as the deputy sheriff of Pima County and later as deputy U.S. marshal for the entire Arizona Territory.

Earp and three of his brothers, together with the American frontiersman Doc Holliday, became famous for their participation in the O.K. Corral gunfight in 1881, in which they killed several suspected cattle rustlers. Eventually, Earp, Bat Masterson (another famous lawman from Kansas), Cochise County Sheriff John Slaughter, and others managed to reduce the violence in the area.
