U.S. Route 66: America's Main Street was viewed as the road to opportunity throughout the first half of the 1900's, being the only road to connect small under populated cities with large metropolitan cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles. Route 66 ushered in the development of tourism, as it was one of the original sites for motels, fill stations, and motor courts. In 1946 Nat King Cole released the song "Get Your Kicks on Route 66", creating a slogan for the American Motorist. |
