Deadwood had a population of nearly 3,000 people September 30, 1876.
Deadwood's first sheriff was Isac Brown. He was elected Miner's Court sheriff over the Jack McCall trial Aug 05, 1876. Isac Brown would later be killed by Indians on August 20th along with Preacher Smith and others. Con Stapleton secured the next marshal's seat on September 16, 1876. |

Jack Gilmer was one of the first operators to consider the possibility of a stage line from Cheyenne to the Black Hills; however, his line was not the first to serve the hills, that was left to Cuthberson and Young and Yates and Brown. | Wild Bill Hickok's death August 5, 1873 triggered a demand for more law and order in the Dakota territory, and resulted in Seth Bullock's appointment as the first Sheriff of Deadwood. He quickly appointed several able, fearless deputies and before long order had settled upon Deadwood. During 1884, Bullock then became a deputy U. S. Marshal in western Dakota Territory.
