The First Model Dragoons were manufactured between 1848-1850. The Dragoon replaced the .44 caliber model of the famous Colt Walker percussion pistol that was used during the Mexican War of 1848. Although the Walker was an improvement over the HUGE Paterson, the Walker still had flaws which Colt needed to fix. Size was still an issue and Colt needed to fix the problems associated with the loading lever. The Dragoon was made slightly smaller than the Walker and was given a positive latch for the loading lever instead of using the spring latch which caused problems on the Walker model.
